She hits Beau with her sword, and the others barely save him. In 1903, Rayna finally finds Julian and the Heretics. His dying words to her were to find all the vampires and destroy them. Julian decides to solve two birds with one stone. Rayna shows up in time to warn him about the Hunter’s Curse. One day, Julian finds her father and nearly kills him. Year after year, he taught her to become stronger. Rayna knew that one day she might take his place, so she needed training. Very, very, very long ago, Rayna’s father was a member of the Five. However, Rayna’s backstory made the whole saga a lot more interesting. Remember that terrible season 5 storyline with Jeremy, Shane, and the Hunters? Yeah, we tried to forget it too. Please do not continue if you do not want to know what happened on The Vampire Diaries season 7 episode 13 “This Woman’s Work” Warning: The Vampire Diaries season 7 spoilers ahead. Her backstory made us not only root for her, but kind of want her to succeed in her mission, if only to finally reach peace. Rayna is the first bad guy whose vengeance has a purpose. The Vampire Diaries has never produced a villain that was actually “the good guy.” All the villains have been characters just more twisted than our lovable villains.
Rayna might just be what the show needed. It reminded us of the early Vampire Diaries days. “This Woman’s Work” finally gave us a compelling, action-packed, and twist-filled great episode. Tonight’s Vampire Diaries episode truly showed the series’ strengths. The Vampire Diaries season 7 started to fall into place after the winter finale.
